You may qualify for free insulation, boiler upgrades, or solar panels through the ECO4 scheme if you receive certain benefits or live in a low-income household. The Great British Insulation Scheme also covers homes in council tax bands A-D. Enter your postcode above to check instantly.
The average UK household saves £1,100 per year with solar panels. A typical 4kW system costs £6,000–£8,000 and pays for itself in 6–7 years. You can also earn money selling excess electricity back to the grid through the Smart Export Guarantee.
ECO4 is a government-backed scheme running until March 2026 that provides free energy efficiency improvements to eligible households. This can include loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, boiler replacements, and first-time central heating systems.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme provides £7,500 towards the cost of an air source heat pump or ground source heat pump. You must own your property and have a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) to apply. Your installer handles the grant application for you.
In most cases, solar panels on domestic roofs are classed as permitted development and don't need planning permission. Exceptions include listed buildings, conservation areas, and panels that protrude more than 200mm from the roof surface.
A typical air source heat pump installation takes 2–3 days. Ground source heat pumps take longer — usually 1–2 weeks due to the ground loop installation. Your installer will survey your home first to plan the work.
