Loft Insulation Grant

Last updated: 18 July 2026

Free loft insulation through ECO4 (to 31 December 2026). No benefits? Check LA Flex and the Warm Homes: Local Grant. Save up to £590/year on energy bills.

Loft insulation is 100% free through the ECO4 government scheme. You pay nothing — the grant covers the full cost of installation. The average UK household saves £590/year on heating bills with proper loft insulation. ECO4 requires qualifying benefits and runs until 31 December 2026. If you don't claim benefits, the live routes are LA Flex and the Warm Homes: Local Grant. The Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS) closed to new applications on 31 March 2026.

Free Loft Insulation — The Easiest Energy Upgrade

Loft insulation is the single most cost-effective way to reduce your energy bills. A quarter of your home's heat escapes through an uninsulated roof. Through ECO4 — and through LA Flex or the Warm Homes: Local Grant if you don't claim benefits — you can get loft insulation installed for free.

How Much Can You Save?

  • Detached house: up to £590/year
  • Semi-detached: up to £390/year
  • Mid-terrace: up to £210/year
  • Bungalow: up to £310/year

Do I Need Loft Insulation?

Government guidelines recommend 270mm of loft insulation. If yours is less than 100mm (about 4 inches) — or if you have none at all — you almost certainly qualify for a free top-up or full installation.

How It's Installed

Loft insulation rolls are laid between and over the joists in your loft space. The process:

  • Takes 2-4 hours
  • Installers access via your loft hatch
  • No disruption to the rooms below
  • Existing insulation is topped up, not removed

Converting your loft instead? That's a different job — a loft conversion turns the space into a room and isn't covered by insulation grants. See what councils actually fund for loft conversions.

Who Qualifies?

ECO4: Qualifying benefits + EPC D or below

No benefits? Check LA Flex and the Warm Homes: Local Grant — your council sets the criteria (income or vulnerability to cold), no benefits needed.

These routes cover the full cost. You may still qualify without benefits via LA Flex. Check your eligibility now.

Government grants for loft insulation

Three government-backed schemes currently fund loft insulation, each with different criteria and deadlines:

Scheme Who it's for Deadline
ECO4 Households on qualifying benefits in EPC D–G homes 31 December 2026
LA Flex No benefits needed — your council sets criteria (income or vulnerability to cold) Runs alongside ECO4
Warm Homes: Local Grant Lower-income households in England, delivered by councils April 2025 – March 2028

All three fund loft insulation at no cost to eligible households. If you're not sure which route fits, the eligibility checker covers all of them in one check.

Don't Wait
